Just minutes from Altamonte Springs, Wekiwa Springs State Park is the kind of place that reminds you why people fall in love with Florida.
The spring runs 72 degrees year-round, surrounded by lush hammocks and miles of trails. You can swim in the crystal-clear water, kayak the Wekiva River, hike through pine flatwoods and sandhill habitats, or just spread out a blanket and listen to the cypress trees.
For those of us who live nearby, having Wekiwa Springs in your backyard is a privilege most Florida residents don’t have. It’s part of why the neighborhoods around it are so coveted, and part of why this corner of the Orlando area feels different from the rest.
Important: Reservations Now Required
As of September 2025, Wekiwa Springs requires day-use reservations for entry. Even annual pass holders need a reservation to get in. This was put in place to reduce the long entrance lines that used to back up onto the road and frustrate visitors.
For locals, this is actually good news. You can reserve up to 60 days in advance, which means less stress and no more sitting in a hot car waiting for someone to leave so you can take their spot.
Make your reservation at reserve.floridastateparks.org before you go. Same-day reservations are sometimes available, but planning ahead is the move.
What to Do at Wekiwa Springs
Swim in the natural spring. The water is a refreshing 72 degrees no matter what month it is, which feels incredible in the summer and surprisingly bracing in winter.
Kayak or canoe the Wekiva River or Rock Springs Run. Rentals are available on-site if you don’t have your own.
Hike more than 13 miles of trails, ranging from a short ADA-accessible boardwalk to longer adventures through pine flatwoods and sandhill habitats.
Look for wildlife. White-tailed deer, gopher tortoises, bobcats, turkeys, and yes, occasionally Florida black bears. Keep your distance and your snacks secured.
Picnic at one of the many shaded spots near the spring head.
It’s the kind of place you can visit a hundred times and still find something new.
The Wekiva Neighborhoods
The neighborhoods that surround Wekiwa Springs and stretch through Longwood and unincorporated Seminole County are some of the most desirable in the region. Mature oak-canopied streets, established homes, and a slower pace that still puts you minutes from the action.
What People Love
Proximity to Wekiwa Springs for weekend hikes, paddles, and dips in the spring.
Walking and biking through neighborhoods with sidewalks, parks, and quiet streets.
The Seminole County Public Library, West Branch on Hunt Club Boulevard. A genuinely beautiful community library with a children’s section, adult fiction, family activities, even a 3D printer. The kind of community resource that makes a place feel like home.
Top-rated public schools within Seminole County’s school district.
A neighborly feel that’s harder to find in newer Florida developments.
If you want established, leafy, and full of character without giving up convenience, this corner of the Orlando area delivers. You’re close to Altamonte’s shopping and dining, minutes from I-4, and surrounded by some of the most beautiful natural areas in Central Florida.
A Quick Note on Orlando vs. Central Florida
If you’re new to the area, you’ll hear “Orlando” and “Central Florida” used somewhat interchangeably, and we use both throughout our writing. Orlando is the city. Central Florida is the broader region that includes Altamonte Springs, the Wekiva area, Winter Park, Lake Mary, Sanford, and beyond. When we say we serve the Orlando area, we mean that broader region.
Why We Love This Corner of the Map
The Wekiva area is one of our favorite parts of the Orlando area because it strikes a balance most places can’t. Wild and quiet, but connected. Established and rooted, but never stagnant. The kind of place where you can hike in the morning, swim in a spring at lunch, and grab dinner on State Road 436 without driving more than 15 minutes total.
If the Wekiva neighborhoods are on your list, we’d love to walk you through what it actually feels like to live here. Specific streets, school zones, what’s trending in the market right now, and what makes certain pockets more desirable than others.
